This is a letter that was written by my grandfather (my mother's father) in 1971 to to be shown to each grandchild as they became adults. He died shortly after the letter was written. I was about to turn 3 years old when the letter was written. It was lost for many years but my mother found it recently. On Christmas, Dec 25, 1999 copies of the letter was was shown to all of his grandchildren.

My grandfather came to this country early in the century from Italy where he had been very poor. In America he worked very hard to provide well for his family. He raised animals on a farm and ran a successful butcher shop where the farm met the highway. During war time when meat was rationed and many butchers made a lot of money by selling outside the ration limits (black market) at high profit, he refused to because he felt it was important to respect the laws of this new country that had treated him so well.

Out of respect for him, I have tried to retain the spelling, grammar, and formatting of the original letter.

New Haven, November 1971.

To my dear grandchildren,
Marie, Roseanna, Edward, Francie and little Tommy,

I foresee that pretti soon I pass away into the other world. The world from which nobody has come back. But before I go I want you to know my feelings.

First of all I want to tell you that when you're young to aquire and keep as long as you leave, that feeling that is called "Self-Confidence." study, learn, and form in yourself that confidence that you know. self-confidence. DO NOT OTHER TELL YOU. Then go to school, go to college, get a profession. Here in America it is possible to work e go to college. Do it.

Remember that life is not possible without love. Love your parents, love your brothers and sisters, love the world. You be happy.

DO NOT HATE.

When time arrives. Get married. Have children. Raise them straight.

During your young e long life, you are bound to see lot things happened.

The social structure in America is not based on a very long life, so it is more than natural that someday you see a big change in the Direction of Goverment in Washington. Stay within the law. We have in American too many riches and too many poor.

your granddad

P.S. Save this letter. Read it more than once.
